Remembering Dick Dystrup

dick dystrupFor over ten years, Dick served Scholarship America and Illinois Dollars For Scholars with tremendous enthusiasm for the mission. He will be remembered for his unwavering spirit and continued commitment to both Dollars for Scholars and his community of Lockport, Ill. Dick coached and taught full-time at Lockport High School for 33 years, and served as mayor from 1993 to 1997. He also served as a Trustee of Joliet Junior College, chairman of the Southern Alliance for the Interstate 355 extension, member of the Lockport Lions Club, Silver Cross Hospital trustee and choir member at United Methodist Church of Lockport. He was instrumental in starting the Will County Community Foundation.

Those who knew and worked alongside Dick will remember his positive attitude and ability to light up a room. Dick is survived by his wife, Barb; daughters, Andra Voulgaris and Libby Hollatz; and 10 grandchildren. A private burial service will be held for family.

In memory of Dick, the first-place scholarship in the Lincolnland Legends Scholarship Contest will now be known as the Dick Dystrup Award. We have also established a memorial scholarship in Dick's name; if you would like to support this scholarship, please visit Scholarship America's donation form.

We encourage you to read the touching Herald News obituary of Dick, and share your memories via their online guestbook. Those wishing to contact Illinois Dollars for Scholars can reach TC Leonard via e-mail.
